"Big Fish"

Based on the celebrated novel by Daniel Wallace and the acclaimed film directed by Tim Burton with a screenplay by John August BIG FISH is a fantastical, heartwarming musical that follows the life of Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman whose larger-than-life stories captivate everyone around him—especially his loving wife, Sandra. But their son, Will, about to become a father himself, is determined to uncover the truth behind his father’s epic tales. As Will embarks on a journey to understand the man behind the myth, BIG FISH explores the power of storytelling, family bonds, and the search for identity.

With its soaring score, unforgettable characters, and a blend of humor and heartfelt emotion, BIG FISH offers an extraordinary theatrical experience that celebrates the joy of life, the importance of family, and the beauty of the stories we tell. Perfect for any stage, BIG FISH will enchant audiences with its dazzling spectacle and timeless themes, making it a perfect choice for theaters seeking a musical that’s as rich and inspiring as life itself.

We will be producing the small cast version which is still two hours long (and NOT the Junior version) and has 12 great roles:

THE FAMILY

-
Edward Bloom: The charismatic, endlessly optimistic storyteller. He views life as a grand adventure, which often blurs the lines between fact and myth. He is deeply devoted to his family but struggles to connect on a practical level. (Baritone A4 to G2) Progresses from mid teens to mid 60's.
-
Will Bloom: Edward’s son. An earnest, intelligent, and practical journalist who craves hard facts and logic. Frustrated by his father's constant storytelling, he makes it his mission to uncover the reality behind Edward's past as he prepares to become a father himself. (Tenor c#3 to Db3)
-
Sandra Bloom: Edward’s patient, loving, and steadfast wife. She is the emotional anchor of the family, acting as a calm mediator between Edward's boundless enthusiasm and Will's serious nature. (Soprano E5 to G3) Progresses from mid teens to mid 60's.
-
Josephine Bloom: Will’s pregnant, intelligent wife. She serves as a gentle bridge between father and son, helping Will understand the deeper meaning of Edward's legends. (Mezzo- Soprano C#5/Db5 to G3)
-
Young Will is 8 to 11 years old. Loves his father, but is already starting to doubt the validity of the fantasitcal stories he tells. Will is practical and itelligent. (non-dancer / vocal range is C5 to B3)

CHARACTERS from EDWARD'S STORIES

-
Karl the Giant: Edward's shy, intelligent best friend who grows from a reclusive social outcast into a successful businessman thanks to Edward's encouragement. (Bass D3 to A2)
-
Amos Calloway/Dr. Bennett - Amos is an eccentric, quirky owner of the circus who employs young Edward. In Edward's storytelling, Amos also happens to harbor a secret: he's a werewolf. Dr. Bennett is Edward's warm, soft-spoken friend and longtime physician who cares for Edward during his final days. (Amos is a Baritone. F4 to C2. Dr Bennett doesn't sing)
-
Don Price: Edward's childhood rival and a general local bully. He is also Sandra's first fiancé. (Baritone F#4/Gb4 to C3)
-
The Witch: The very first fantastic character Edward meets. She reveals how he will die using her fortune-telling abilities, teaching him to live a "big life" without fear. (Mezzo-Soprano F5 to F3)
-
Jenny Hill (Adult and Young): Edward's devoted teenage sweetheart in Ashton. Jenny appears as a teenager, and as an adult in her sixties. As an adult, she becomes disillusioned and tired. She plays a crucial role in helping Will uncover the human reality of his father's stories. (Mezzo-Soprano E5 to G3)
-
Girl in the Water
-
Zacky Price/Mayor - Zacky Price is Don’s younger, nerdy brother who blindly shadows him as a comedic sidekick. (Tenor G#4/Ab4 to A3)
